Proposal to Build Casino Near Gettysburg National Military Park Stopped

December 2006

Twenty months after one of the country’s largest slots casinos was proposed within cannon range of Gettysburg National Military Park (NMP), the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board denied the Chance Enterprise’s application on December 20, 2006.  Clearly, the Gaming Control Board listened to the opposition of thousands of Americans who strongly believed that a casino would be incompatible with Gettysburg’s historic character.

This victory would not have been possible without the active and frequent engagement of concerned citizens.  During the campaign, thousands of individuals throughout Pennsylvania and nationwide wrote to the Gaming Control Board expressing their opposition to the proposal.  Our voices ultimately convinced the board that Gettysburg was not an appropriate location for a casino.

We would like to commend the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board for recognizing the importance of protecting the character of this unique town, and their respect for the memory of all those who fought during the battle at Gettysburg.  We look forward to continuing to work with Gettysburg-area residents on ways to protect the park’s, and the region’s, long-term future.

Again, we would like to thank all who helped defeat this ill-advised proposal.  We look forward to continuing to work with you to protect Gettysburg NMP and other national parks for this and future generations.
