National Parks Conservation Association Praises Senate Legislation to Expand Service in National Parks

Press Statement by Alan Spears, National Parks Conservation Association Legislative Representative

“Thanks to the leadership of Senator Bingaman and Senator Snowe, bipartisan legislation introduced in the Senate today could create more service opportunities in national parks and other public lands to address the deteriorating condition of many parks, while also providing unique job training opportunities for many Americans.

“In the national parks, which have a backlog of maintenance projects that exceeds $8 billion, new Service Corps members might rehabilitate campgrounds, restore historic structures, eradicate invasive species, and help conduct science and research projects in the park system.

“Congress can help our national parks and create opportunities for thousands of Americans by passing this legislation this summer.”

Companion legislation in the House (H.R. 1612) was passed out of Committee in June and is awaiting floor action.
