National Parks Conservation Association Hopes Introduction of Senate Bill Signals Action on Climate Change in Parks

Today Senator Barbara Boxer, Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, and Senator John Kerry introduced the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act which includes provisions to address natural resource adaption in our national parks.

Statement by Mark Wenzler, director of clean air and climate programs for NPCA:

“Senators Boxer and Kerry have put forth a bold plan that will begin to address the issue of climate change and the impacts it will continue to have on our national parks and wildlife. The warning signs are clear, from melting glaciers to raging wildfires, floods, and drought.

“This bill takes an important step of lowering greenhouse gas levels as well as setting aside dedicated funding to protect wildlife and their habitats to both ensure the health of our citizens and continued economic growth. We commend Senators Boxer and Kerry for recognizing that major investments are needed to safeguard our air, water, wildlife, and national parks.

“We hope the Senate will act quickly to pass strong protections that will keep our communities and national parks healthy now and for our children and grandchildren.”
