NPCA Commends Sec. Salazar for Suspending Uranium Mining Claims Near Grand Canyon

Statement by David Nimkin, Southwest Regional Director:

"Secretary Salazar is to be commended for a decision to halt new mining claims on Arizona lands near Grand Canyon National Park pending review, and for letting science and well-informed decision-making prevail. The withdrawal of mining claims will allow for a careful review of almost 11,000 uranium mining claims that have been filed in the past few years within the Grand Canyon’s watershed.

"More than 4 million people visit the Grand Canyon each year, and nearly 25 million people downstream depend upon the Colorado River’s water.  This icon and the region deserve policies that consider long-term impacts, to ensure their protection for our children and grandchildren."
