National Parks Conservation Association Applauds Administration’s Commitment to Science

Statement by NPCA President Tom Kiernan

“The National Parks Conservation Association applauds President Obama for directing federal agencies to base public policy on sound science, a new and welcome development for the preservation of our national parks.

“In 2008, the National Park Service’s recommendations in favor of strengthening ozone standards to protect national parks were not taken into consideration, risking damage to natural resources and visitors. The Bush Administration also ignored the agency's science-based recommendations regarding allowing snowmobiles in Yellowstone National Park.

“We look to Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar to also embrace science-based policy decisions in our national parks, including the protection of wildlife, clean air and water, and other natural resources.”
