National Parks Conservation Association Supports Feinstein's Steps to Protect California Desert

Statement by NPCA Pacific Regional Director Ron Sundergill

“Senator Feinstein has a strong record of taking courageous action to protect the California desert, and the National Parks Conservation Association fully supports her efforts to create a new national monument on federally-owned lands between the Mojave National Preserve and Joshua Tree National Park

“Senator Feinstein played a pivotal role in creating Joshua Tree and Death Valley National Parks and Mojave National Preserve. Her proposal would protect more of the landscape and recreational opportunities of the California desert, so that our children and grandchildren will be able to see desert tortoises in the wild, hike to hidden oases, and experience the inspiring beauty of this region.

“The National Parks Conservation Association supports renewable energy development where appropriate. This proposed monument, however, is adjacent to protected national lands and forms an important wildlife corridor that includes habitat for endangered species. It should be protected in its natural state for all to enjoy.”
