Upcoming Event: Candlelight Rally to Support Protecting the Continental Army’s Encampment Grounds at Valley Forge National Historical Park

Outsized Commercial Development Plan Would Pave Over America’s History

WHAT:
On Sunday, concerned citizens will gather at Valley Forge National Historical Park for a candlelight vigil to remember General George Washington and the Continental Army’s winter encampment in 1777-78.  Park advocates are concerned the American Revolution Center’s outsized commercialized development plan would pave over America’s history and threaten the historic character of Valley Forge.

Visuals:  General George Washington will attend the event and talk about his time at Valley Forge before lighting the first candle.

WHO:
The Friends of Valley Forge, Lower Providence Concerned Citizens, the National Parks Conservation Association, Sierra Club, and concerned citizens.

WHEN:
November 16, 2008
Time:  5:30 p.m.

Rain Date:  November 23, 2008
Time:  5:30 p.m.

WHERE:
The National Memorial Arch
Valley Forge National Historical Park
Park Address: 1400 North Outerline Drive
King of Prussia, PA

Background:  Despite the objections of local residents, in September 2007, the Lower Providence Board of Supervisors approved the “Living History Overlay District,” which would allow a museum and inappropriate commercial development, including a hotel and conference center, to be built on privately-owned historic land inside the park. The lands at risk were vital to the Continental Army’s winter encampment.  For more information, please click here.
