Congress Passes Everglades Resolutions, Demonstrates Commitment to Restoration
Statement by John Adornato, Regional Director, National Parks Conservation Association
"Congress yesterday demonstrated their commitment to restoring America's Everglades by passing a resolution to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Everglades National Park, and a resolution to honor the work of Marjory Stoneman Douglas for her role in bringing national attention to the beauty and value of the Everglades.
We applaud Senator Bill Nelson, Senator Mel Martinez, Representative Alcee Hastings, Representative Mario Diaz-Balart, and the entire Florida delegation for supporting resolutions that advance critical Everglades restoration projects and ensure the long-term preservation of this national treasure.
We urge our elected officials to stay focused on those basic principles originally outlined to restore America's River of Grass and provide the necessary funding in fiscal year 2009 to support ongoing restoration activities, such as Tamiami Trail, and the park's operating needs.
Designated a World Heritage Site, an International Biosphere Reserve, and a Wetland of International Importance, Everglades National Park is a unique ecosystem that is beloved by visitors from around the world. Everglades restoration must remain a national priority to ensure present and future generations can enjoy this national treasure."
