National Parks Conservation Association Mourns Loss of President, Park Ranger Ford

Like all Americans, the National Parks Conservation Association is mourning the loss of President Gerald Ford. He is honored today in Washington, D.C., for his service to the nation. As a young man, President Ford served as a seasonal park ranger in the U.S. National Park System—the only president to do so—and his summer at Yellowstone National Park inspired him to champion our national parks.

Speaking at Yellowstone shortly after the July 4, 1976, Bicentennial celebration, President Ford said, “There is something wonderful about the wide open spaces that is almost a necessity for Americans… We must act now to prevent the loss of treasures that can never be replaced for ourselves, our children, and for future generations of Americans.”

We encourage all Americans to visit a national park this year in honor of President Ford, and share his appreciation and advocacy for these greatest of American places.
