The outrageous provision in the Fiscal Year 2007 Department of Defense bill to maintain deer and elk populations on Santa Rosa Island for private hunting has no place in this legislation.

The National Park Service, Paralyzed Veterans of America, and local Representative Lois Capps have all expressed opposition to this provision. Furthermore, the Department of Defense did not even ask for this provision in the bill.

This is an outrage that sacrifices a national treasure, which belongs to all Americans. The provision ought to be repealed.

The National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) entered into a good faith agreement with the National Park Service and the previous land owners that would protect the parks resources and ensure that Channel Islands continues to welcome present and future generations of park visitors. However, Representative Duncan Hunter unilaterally circumvented the legal process and undermined this agreement with this outrageous proposal.
