Parks Group Says National Parks Need an Advocate in Gov. Kempthorne

Press statement by NPCA President Tom Kiernan:

"Our national parks are no longer treading water but are in danger of sinking, and urgently need an advocate in Interior Secretary nominee Dirk Kempthorne.

"If confirmed, Gov. Kempthorne stands to inherit a National Park System that faces enormous challenges, including an annual operating shortfall in excess of $600 million, a multi-billion dollar maintenance backlog, and an ongoing, potentially damaging effort to rewrite national park Management Policies.

"Since he has been an advocate for Idaho’s state parks, we are extremely hopeful that Gov. Kempthorne’s appreciation for our natural and cultural treasures will translate into more sufficient funding and greater protection for America’s beloved National Park System."
