Statement by Tom Martin, NPCA Executive Vice President, on Leavitt’s Visit to Sleeping Bear Dunes

Washington, D.C. - “We welcome EPA Administrator Mike Leavitt’s visit to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and hope it signals a commitment from the administration to address the critical needs of our national parks. We must intervene quickly to increase funding and give the National Park Service the needed tools to address chronic pollution, invasive species, and other threats to these irreplaceable American treasures.”

The National Parks Conservation Association’s recent report on the $600-million annual operating shortfall and staffing shortages in the national parks, Endangered Rangers, is available online. Information about the parks’ burgeoning maintenance backlog is also available online.

Nearly 100 scientists, environmental and conservation leaders, business and foundation professionals, and educators from throughout the United States and Ontario, including the National Parks Conservation Association, authored recommendations for protecting the Great Lakes in a new report called Healing Our Waters: An Agenda for Great Lakes Restoration.
