NPCA Calls on President Bush to Protect America's History

Washington, D.C. - "The Fourth of July and Independence National Historical Park celebrate the birth of America as a model for freedom worldwide, which is why President Bush has chosen the park for a speech today about faith-based initiatives," said National Parks Conservation Association President Thomas Kiernan. "But Independence Park is also a metaphor for the dismal condition of many of our historical sites. The park is in need of more than $6 million in repairs, including measures needed for the protection of artifacts that date to the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

"The Bush Administration has proposed funding to correct some of the problems at Independence Park, but other national parks need immediate assistance to protect valuable historical and cultural artifacts, wildlife, and other resources. President Bush has proposed adding almost $5 billion to the national parks budget over the next five years, but he is directing virtually all of the additional funding to road and construction projects. His plan for parks will not significantly improve natural and cultural resource protection or visitor experience needs such as education programs, which is why NPCA recently gave him a D grade on his parks management report card. Independence Day would be a good day for President Bush to reconsider his park priorities to include protection of the natural and historical resources the parks were created to honor in the first place."
