A Climate of Change

As Jeff Rennicke's article illustrates, global warming's impact on national parks is already being felt, and it’s sure to increase in the coming years. But parks aren’t sitting idly by. Visitors centers in Zion National Park and Denali National Park are making use of green technology to minimize their footprint on the land, and to educate the thousands of visitors who step inside their walls each year.
The illustrations that follow were all created by Homan Koliji, under the guidance of Patrick Miller and Robert Schubert, at The Land Design and Simulation Lab, part of the Landscape Architecture Program in the School of Architecture and Design at Virginia Tech. Each demonstrates some of the forward-looking practices sure to emerge in our national parks as they approach their 100th anniversary in 2016.
