Environmental Adventure Company

The Environmental Adventure Company began as a “mom & pop” operation. Founder Michael Sanders started the company to capitalize on his love of sharing his knowledge about special places with others. He wanted to offer people the opportunity to participate in adventures that incorporated strong goals for responsible travel. These include making every effort to minimize or eliminate any impact to wildlife and their habitats, strengthening and encouraging conservation endeavors taking place at each destination, supporting local economies by using local guides and naturalists as much as possible, developing programs that enhance the senses and create an enriched appreciation of our natural world, treating all cultures with respect and sensitivity of their beliefs and lifestyles, and leaving the earth better than we found it. Ten years down the road, Environmental Adventure Company continues to focus on these goals and now offers trips to a wide variety of special destinations -- providing unique experiences and learning opportunities for travelers.

Outdoor Adventure River Specialists (O.A.R.S.)

O.A.R.S. was the first oar-powered outfitter permitted to run the Colorado through the Grand Canyon back in 1969. George Wendt, president and founder of O.A.R.S. barely missed being one of the first 1000 people ever to raft the Colorado River through Grand Canyon National Park. That trip fostered a dream for him, that later came to fruition, forever changing the life of this former middle school science teacher. In 1969, that dream came true; with his friend Ed Gooch, Wendt established Gooch-Wendt Expeditions, running professional trips on the Colorado River. Shortly thereafter, the company was selected as the first small-raft, oar-powered operator in the Grand Canyon, and was appropriately renamed O.A.R.S. (Outdoor Adventure River Specialists). In 1972, Wendt and his wife Pam took over full operation of O.A.R.S. Over the years, O.A.R.S. has become the largest and most diverse river company in the West, yet maintains the priniciples of its roots as a leader in the responsible travel industry. O.A.R.S. shares NPCA's environmental mission by striving to enrich people's lives while providing outstanding adventure experiences and personally encouraging and actively supporting awareness, deeper appreciation, and preservation of our rivers and natural ecosystems -- including those running within America's national parks.
