July 8: Akron Canton Airport to Cuyahoga Falls
The tour begins with dinner at the Sheraton Suites in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. The hotel is perched on the edge of the falls and gorge of the Cuyahoga River. July 9: Cuyahoga Valley National Park
Exploration begins with an exclusive train tour of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. We will board vintage self-propelled RDC coaches that are fully equipped with comfortable reclining seats, panoramic windows, air conditioning, and modern rest rooms. On-board interpreters will point out natural and historic sites and lead walks at selected stops along the route. During our travels, we will walk a historic section of the towpath and visit a restored lockmaster’s house with operating locks. Evening activities feature a special park program. July 10: Cuyahoga Valley National Park
Following breakfast, we will begin our exploration of portions of the Ohio and Erie Canal National Heritage Corridor. Imagine the height of canal boats waiting to traverse the fifteen “staircase locks” in a single mile that lifted and lowed the canal boats across the watershed divide. Following lunch in a canal-side restaurant, we will view Summit Lake, where the canal towpath was a floating boardwalk, and then trace the canal south to Canal Fulton, where we will board the restored canal boat Helena 3 for a smooth horse-powered cruise. July 11: Cuyahoga Valley National Park
Discover the fascinating history told by distinctive rock formations of the Ledges as we stroll along the base of the rock bluffs. We’ll visit several waterfalls and gorgeous gorges that are part of the park’s tributary system. The park visitor centers each tell a different story, and we will take time to visit them all, including an award winning historic CCC-built nature center and a modern underground nature center. We will walk scenic sections of the 26-mile Tow Path Trail through verdant forests and along the surprisingly beautiful Cuyahoga River and take time for a well-earned rest at the local ice cream shop. We will return to our hotel in time to freshen up and get ready to travel to the nearby Blossom Music Center for some of the best music in the land by the Cleveland Orchestra. Sheraton Suites (B,L,D)
July 12: Cleveland & the Cuyahoga River
Today we trundle off to see a few of the cultural and natural highlights of the region. Our first stop will be at the private Holden Arboretum, one of the largest arboreta in the world. We will walk through thousands of flowers in one of the country’s largest outdoor butterfly gardens and tour some of the other collections of this famous facility. Later we will travel to the University Circle area of Cleveland where you will have the opportunity to visit the Cleveland Botanical Gardens and/or the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and/or the Cleveland Museum of Art. They are all outstanding institutions. Enjoy your farewell dinner onboard the Holiday Cruise as you journey to the mouth of the Cuyahoga River at Lake Erie. Sheraton Suites (B,L,D)
