Sign On Letter for Support of a National Park in Chicago

National parks are the soul of America, telling our diverse stories and teaching valuable lessons about our shared heritage. And few sites preserve the history of American industry, labor and urban planning as well as the Pullman community in Chicago. Pullman honors the unique stories of railroads in America’s industrial past, labor history - including formation of the first African-American labor union, urban planning and development of the country’s first model industrial town. Its undisputed historic significance makes Pullman worthy of national parks status.

The nearly intact Pullman neighborhood is located just a short train ride or drive from downtown Chicago. The Factory Clocktower stands tall over the rows of managers and workers homes, and Arcade Park still provides a small oasis among the red brick buildings that comprise the signature architecture of Pullman.

NPCA is working with a group of local Pullman, Chicago, and national organizations to establish Pullman as Chicago’s first national park. Join NPCA and partners in supporting a great addition to our National Park System.

WE SUPPORT A NATIONAL PARK IN CHICAGO:

America’s national parks include some of the most beautiful places on Earth, as well as places that honor important parts of our culture and heritage. These special places provide the opportunity to celebrate and learn about our shared past.

Pullman preserves our history and honors uniquely American stories, including the role of railroads in America’s industrial past, the formation of the first African-American labor union, and development of the country’s first model industrial town. Its undisputed historic significance makes Pullman worthy of becoming a national park.

National parks are tremendous economic generators contributing more than $10 billion annually to local economies and supporting more than a quarter million jobs.

We support establishing the Pullman Historic District as Chicago’s first national park.
